Real fuel economy can change with speed, weather, traffic, elevation, tire pressure, idling, and vehicle load.
Example: Hannah budgets for a road trip
Hannah plans a 300-mile trip in a car averaging 30 miles per US gallon. The trip needs approximately 300 ÷ 30 = 10 gallons. At $3.50 a gallon, the estimated fuel cost is $35.
For a return trip of the same distance, enter 600 miles. Parking, tolls, maintenance, and differences in traffic or driving conditions are separate from the fuel estimate.
The three inputs that drive trip fuel cost
Distance determines how far the vehicle must travel, MPG estimates how many miles are covered per gallon, and gas price sets the dollar cost of each gallon. The model first calculates gallons needed, then multiplies by price per gallon.
If you are planning a round trip, make sure the distance includes both directions. For a multi-stop route, use the total planned mileage rather than the straight-line distance between the start and destination.
Real-world MPG can differ from the dashboard or EPA estimate
Fuel economy changes with speed, traffic, idling, temperature, terrain, tire pressure, cargo, towing, and driving style. A planning result is more useful when the MPG input reflects how the vehicle actually performs on similar trips.
If you have fuel receipts, calculate recent real-world MPG and use that number. Otherwise, compare a conservative and optimistic MPG scenario to create a cost range.
Gas price can vary along the route
The calculator uses one average price per gallon for the entire trip. Long routes can cross regions with meaningfully different fuel prices, so the final cost can differ even when mileage is accurate.
For a rough trip budget, use an average or slightly conservative fuel price rather than the cheapest station at the starting point.
