For payroll expressed in decimal hours, 8 hours 30 minutes is 8.5 hours, not 8.30. Overtime premiums and payroll rounding are separate from this time calculation.

A 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM shift lasts 8.5 hours. Subtract a 30-minute unpaid break to get 8 paid hours.

Convert the minutes after the hour by dividing by 60. For example, 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours. At $20 per hour, that is $155 in gross pay before deductions.
