Simplified ratio = (A ÷ GCD) : (B ÷ GCD). Decimal relationship = A ÷ B.

Order matters. A ratio of 2:3 does not mean the same thing as 3:2.

Example: Sofia simplifies a mixture ratio

Sofia mixes 16 parts of one ingredient with 24 parts of another. Both values divide by 8, so the simplified ratio is 2:3.

This means two parts of the first ingredient for every three parts of the second. The total is five parts; the first ingredient is 2/5 of the mixture, not 2/3.

Simplifying a ratio preserves the relationship

A ratio such as 12:18 can be simplified by dividing both terms by their greatest common factor. Dividing both by 6 produces 2:3, which describes the same proportional relationship using smaller integers.

Just as with fractions, both sides must be changed by the same factor. Changing only one side changes the ratio itself.

Use consistent units before comparing quantities

A ratio can be misleading when the two values use different units. For example, comparing 3 feet with 24 inches as 3:24 ignores the fact that 3 feet equals 36 inches.

Convert quantities to compatible units first when the ratio is meant to compare physical amounts directly.
