APY is designed to reflect the effect of compounding over one year. This model uses the stated APY as an effective annual yield and assumes the yield remains unchanged for the term.

Example: Aisha estimates a one-year CD

Aisha deposits $10,000 into a 12-month CD with an illustrative APY of 4.5%. Assuming the interest remains invested, the estimated maturity value is $10,450, including $450 in interest.

For shorter terms, the calculator uses a fractional-year growth factor. The bank may use actual days and its own payout rules, and an early withdrawal can reduce the amount received.

CD APY, term, and maturity value

A certificate of deposit generally locks an initial deposit into a stated term while interest accrues under the account's disclosed rate and compounding rules. The maturity value is the starting deposit plus the interest credited under the model by the end of that term.

A longer term does not automatically produce a better outcome. The APY offered for each term can differ, and committing money for longer can reduce flexibility.

Early withdrawal can change the result

Many CDs impose an early-withdrawal penalty when funds are taken out before maturity. That penalty can reduce the interest earned and, depending on the account terms, can affect principal in some situations.

This calculator assumes the deposit remains for the full entered term. Use the bank's deposit agreement to evaluate early-withdrawal consequences.

Taxes and renewal are separate decisions

Interest may have tax consequences, and a maturing CD may renew automatically unless instructions are provided during the bank's grace period. Neither issue changes the mathematical growth shown here, but both can matter to the real outcome.
