How to use the date difference calculator
Choose the start and end dates. The calculator uses calendar-day boundaries and reports the signed difference as well as the absolute number of days.
Date difference method
Using date-only UTC values prevents daylight-saving clock changes from turning a calendar day into a 23- or 25-hour interval.
Example: Jack counts the days in a booking interval
Jack checks the interval from January 1 to January 31, 2026. The result is 30 elapsed calendar days, or 4 weeks and 2 days.
Counting both January 1 and January 31 as included dates would give 31 dates. This tool uses the elapsed difference and does not add an extra day for inclusive counting.
Elapsed days vs. inclusive date counting
The difference between two dates usually measures elapsed time from the start date to the end date. Under that convention, the start date itself is not counted as a full elapsed day at the starting moment.
Some planning tasks use inclusive counting, where both calendar dates are counted. If a deadline rule specifies inclusive days, adjust the interpretation to match that rule rather than assuming every date-difference tool uses the same convention.
Calendar days are not business days
This calculator counts calendar time, including weekends. It does not automatically exclude weekends, federal holidays, company closures, or jurisdiction-specific business-day rules.
For contracts, court deadlines, shipping commitments, or benefits, follow the official definition of a business day that applies to the situation.
Assumptions and limitations
What the estimate assumes
This counts calendar-day boundaries, not business days or working days.
Date Difference Calculator FAQs
Does this include the start date?
The difference is the elapsed number of calendar days between the date values. Two identical dates have a difference of zero.
Does daylight saving time affect the result?
The calculation normalizes date-only values so DST clock shifts do not add or remove a calendar day.
Can the result be negative?
Yes. A negative signed result means the end date is before the start date.
Does this count weekdays only?
No. It counts all calendar days.
Does the date difference include weekends?
Yes. This calculator measures calendar days. It does not remove weekends or holidays.
Why can inclusive day counts be one day higher?
Inclusive counting treats both the start and end dates as counted dates, while elapsed-time counting measures the time between them.
