Enter the original price and the percent-off discount. The calculator subtracts the discount amount from the original price.

Discount formula

Calculation formulaDiscount formula
Used for the result above
Savings = original price × discount rate. Sale price = original price − savings.

A 20% discount means you pay 80% of the original price before taxes, shipping, or other charges.

Example: Chloe checks a sale price

Chloe finds a $75 jacket marked 20% off. The discount is $75 × 0.20 = $15, so the sale price is $60 before tax or delivery charges.

Two consecutive 20% discounts would leave $48, because the second discount applies to $60. They are equivalent to 36% off the original price, not 40%.

Percent off vs. dollars saved

The discount percentage describes the share of the original price being removed. The dollar savings depends on the original price, so the same 20% discount saves $10 on a $50 item and $40 on a $200 item.

The sale price is the original price minus the dollar discount. Looking at both values is useful when comparing promotions across items with different starting prices.

Stacked discounts are multiplied, not simply added

Two successive 20% discounts are not the same as one 40% discount. The second discount is usually applied to the already-reduced price, so the combined reduction is 36% of the original price.

This calculator applies one discount percentage. For a stacked promotion, calculate the first sale price and use that result as the starting price for the next discount.

Sales tax, coupons, and cashback are separate

A store can apply sales tax before or after certain discounts depending on the jurisdiction and promotion rules. Manufacturer coupons, store coupons, rebates, and cashback can also be treated differently.

The calculator shows the price effect of the entered percentage only. Add tax or other promotion rules separately when they matter to the final checkout total.

Assumptions and limitations

What the estimate assumes

Sales tax, shipping, coupons with special rules, and stacked promotions are not included.

Discount Calculator FAQs

How do I calculate 25% off?

Multiply the original price by 0.25 to find the savings, then subtract that amount from the original price.

Does the calculator include sales tax?

No. Use the Sales Tax Calculator after finding the discounted price if you also want to estimate tax.

Can the discount be 100%?

Yes. A 100% discount produces a $0 sale price in this simple model.

What if two discounts are stacked?

Apply the first discount, then use the resulting price as the original price for the second discount. Two 20% discounts are not the same as one 40% discount.

How do I calculate 20% off?

Multiply the original price by 0.20 to get the savings, then subtract that savings from the original price. Equivalently, multiply the original price by 0.80 to get the sale price.

Are two 20% discounts the same as 40% off?

No. If each discount is applied sequentially, the second 20% is taken from the already-discounted price. The combined discount is 36% of the original price.

Does the discount calculator include sales tax?

No. It calculates the percentage discount and sale price before any separate tax, shipping, or coupon rules.

Simple price calculation. Retailer promotion rules and taxes can change the actual checkout price.
