Example: Ben leaves interest in the account
Ben starts with $10,000 and assumes a 4% nominal annual rate, compounded annually for three years. With no withdrawals or further deposits, the ending balance is $10,000 × 1.04³ = $11,248.64.
The $1,248.64 difference is modeled interest. Choose monthly compounding only when that matches the account terms; changing the frequency changes the estimate.
Deposits usually matter more than small rate differences
For many short- and medium-term savings goals, the amount and consistency of recurring deposits can have a larger effect on the ending balance than a small difference in interest rate. The calculator lets you change both so you can see which assumption is doing the work.
Compare scenarios by keeping the rate fixed while increasing the contribution, then keep the contribution fixed while changing the rate. That prevents a higher yield from distracting from the importance of the savings amount itself.
Savings rate vs. advertised APY
A bank can quote an interest rate and an APY. APY incorporates the effect of compounding under the account's disclosure rules, while a nominal rate is the rate applied before that compounding effect.
Use the account's current disclosure when you want to reproduce an advertised yield. If you are comparing a stated rate with a separate APY, do not assume the two percentages are interchangeable.
Contribution timing and withdrawals
This model uses a consistent recurring contribution pattern. Real balances can change because deposits arrive on different days, withdrawals reduce the amount earning interest, and variable-rate accounts can change their rate over time.
For planning, keep the assumptions simple and update them as your actual savings behavior changes.

The input is a nominal annual rate plus compounding frequency. If your bank quotes APY, use the APY Calculator or a model designed to use APY directly.
Can I add monthly deposits?

What is the difference between interest earned and contributions?
Contributions are money you add to the account. Interest earned is the growth produced by the modeled rate on eligible balances.
Can a savings account rate change?
Yes, many savings rates are variable. The calculator holds the entered rate constant for the scenario, so recalculate when the account rate changes.
Should I enter the interest rate or APY?
Use the rate requested by the calculator and compare it with the account's disclosure. APY already reflects compounding, so it should not automatically be substituted into a nominal-rate formula.
